Heaven & Earth

Heaven & Earth is a PC/Mac game published in 1992 by Buena Vista Software, a now defunct division of Disney. The game features four parts:
  • The Pendulum. A meditative action game that can only be mastered through quiet patience, not frantic button pushing.
  • Heaven & Earth. A card game designed by Michael Feinberg, creator of the classic meditative solitaire game Ishido, the way of stones.
  • The Illusions. A collection of 576 puzzles, of 12 different types, that play on the theme of changing your perceptions. I designed this part of the game.
  • The Pilgrammage. A sequence of 100+ puzzles sampled from the rest of the game.

The game has long been out of print, but is available for free download from:

The Underdogs (PC). An archive of out of print games. From this page you can download the PC version of Heaven & Earth, which was written for DOS, and has some problems under some versions of Windows. Also check out Ishido, a wonderful solitaire puzzle game created by much of the same team (not including yours truly), that was the immediate predecessor to Heaven & Earth. A variation on Ishido is available online as Alchemy on Popcap. I also recommend The Fool's Errand (all time great puzzle game for Mac only) and Cogito (smaller accomplishment but good; kind of a 2-d Rubik's Cube).

Ian Gilman (Mac). This version includes both the full Macintosh version, which has much prettier graphics than the PC version, and the user's manual. Ian programmed the Mac version of Heaven & Earth, all as Ishido. You can also get the Mac versions of Ishido here.
