For Teachers
Most of my work has an educational intent, even if it isn't labeled as educational. Listed below are handouts, classroom activities, books and computer games. Most can be used with a wide range of ages, from about 2nd grade up.


Activities

Sudoku 5x5 puzzles. Answers. A quick and fun version of Sudoku, on a 5x5 grid instead of the standard 9x9 grid, appropriate for 2nd through 8th grade students. Includes twelve puzzles nicely ordered from easy to hard, and comments on the problem solving strategies that Sudoku teaches.

Math dance. Classroom activities for teaching mathematics through movement, and dance through mathematical explorations. Grades 4 and up.

Inversions Activities. Handouts and classroom activities for teaching the mathematics and art of symmetry. Grades 3 and up.

Double Maze. A web game with 12 levels that makes a challenging problem solving activity. Grades 4 and up.


Articles

Ten Ways to Use Puzzles in Math Education. Written for the annual meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, April 22, 2002. A brief overview of many different ways puzzles can help you teach mathematics at all grade levels, with many specific references.


Products

Inversions Book, Posters. The book contains over 60 examples of my symmetrical lettering art. Great for reproducing as overhead transparencies or images to post on the bulletin boards. Includes classroom handouts. The posters include an 8 page booklet of classroom activities. Grades 4 and up.

Pit Droids (PC). Based on characters from Star Wars Episode 1, this is a deeply educational game similar to The Logical Journey of the Zoombinis. Over 300 puzzles that address spatial reasoning, sets, ratios and problem solving. Includes a mode that lets kids create and play their own puzzles. Grades 6 and up.

Railroad Rush Hour. Physical puzzle with toy trains, and over 50 challenge cards ranging from very easy to extremely difficult. Develops spatial reasoning and strategic thinking. Good supplementary activity. Grades 3 and up.

Stagecast Creator (Mac, PC). Kids think its a program for making movies, interactive stories and games. Creator contains the programming depth of Logo and the visual creativity of KidPix. Originally created by researchers at Apple Computer. Grades 3 and up.
