The Discover Boggler By Scott Kim |
| Jul 2000 | Four Sides to Every Problem The theme this month is squares. Touchy Subject. Based on the classic puzzle of arranging six cubes so every cube touches every other cube. That is equivalent to the first puzzle. By changing the cubes to flat sheets of paper I was able to squeeze out some new problems. Queens at Peace. Based on the classic puzzle of arranging eight queens on a chessboard so no queen attacks any other. There is a lively discussion among mathematicians going on right now at mathpuzzle.com that extends this problem to three sets of queens. Quadrilateral Thinking. When I was in fifth grade I was fascinated by different types of geometric figures. I particularly liked the fact that the rhombus and rectangle are both subclasses of parallelograms, but neither is a subclass of the other. I think the puzzle is a bit clumsy, but the topic is still fascinating. |
